What's Your Preference! It is the first of the year; have you checked your preferences lately? Whether you have just started using QuickBooks, just installed a new version, or you have been using it for years, you should go through QuickBooks' Preferences once a year. The more you use QuickBooks the more familiar you become with this program and as you become more familiar with it you may find that changing your Preferences can personalize this software to run and look the way that is a perfect fit for your company. The best news is this only takes a little time and you just may find something that can make doing accounting a whole lot easier. Two years ago I had just installed my 2003 version and I was going through the Preferences as I always do and I was thrilled to see QuickBooks has added "Use today's date as default" to the Preferences. (see diagram below) Selecting this option means that QuickBooks will not remember that historical date that you need to enter occasionally. It will always open every new transaction with Today's Date.
Make sure your default accounts are properly selected to save you time when you write checks or deposit funds. (see diagram below)
